Our History
The Diamond Hill United Methodist Church has its roots in early American Methodism when the area was served by Circuit Riders beginning in 1787. Having typically met in people’s homes as Classes or Society, by 1833 there were sufficient numbers in the Cos Cob - Mianus area to warrant procurement of a church building. The first building, at the northern corner of Nassau Place, was the Mianus Methodist Episcopal Church and was typical of the meeting houses of the day with low ceilings, straight-backed pews, low spire, and plain glass windows.
The present property was donated for $1.00 in 1867 and work on the stone Gothic sanctuary with an 80-foot tower began in the fall of that year. The stone was quarried from the property and the chestnut wood for the doors and the pews was donated by a church member from the trees on his property. The first service was held in the new church in November 1868. The first of our beautiful stained glass windows were given as memorial gifts in 1879. The first pipe organ was installed in 1882. The original bell was given in 1894 and is still in use today. By the late 1890’s, the name had been officially changed to the Diamond Hill Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1955, work began on an addition that would include the fellowship hall, kitchen and offices.
The name changed to Diamond Hill Methodist Church in 1939 following the merger of the Methodist Episcopal Church North and the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Another name change occurred in 1968 following the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. The name became Diamond Hill United Methodist Church and it carries that name today.
